The Theory Test

You must complete and pass your theory test before you can take your practical test. The theory test can be taken anytime and even before you start your driving lessons although. This helps you understand the theory and helps put the knowledge in to practice.

The driving theory test consists of two parts.  Part one is a multiple choice test of 50 questions and part two is a hazard perception test consisting of 14 video clips in which you will have to identify 15 developing hazards.

In the multiple choice section you need to score at least 43 to pass the actual test within a set time period. In the hazard perception test you will need to score 44 or more out of 75 to pass this part of the theory test.

You will need to pass both parts of the test at the same time to pass your theory test.

Hazard Perception

Hazard perception is the ability of the driver to identify situations at the earliest possible opportunity that might require them to take some form of avoiding action ie changing speed or direction.

This involves techniques such as scanning the road ahead, selecting a safe distance from the car in front, using the appropriate speed and planning ahead.

The Practical Driving Test

The driving part of the test will last about 35 – 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving. You can make up to 15 minor driving faults and still pass your test, however if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test. The practical driving test is designed to ensure you can drive safely, that you know the Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving.

At the beginning of the test you will be asked to read a number plate at a set distance. You will then be asked two safety check questions concerning the car itself. You will then be taken on the road by the examiner and he will check your general driving including reversing and may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop. You are allowed to take someone with you on the test and this person must be over 16 years old. If at any time your examiner considers you to be a danger to other road users your test will be stopped.
